Reuben and I only own a fairly small shoe collection each, I find this so much easier than having dozens of shoes that never get worn and it means that we are able to buy decent shoes that will last a while. I find that we tend to stick to wearing the same trainers a lot of the time – everyone has that staple pair of shoes that they just wear constantly don’t they?! I find it much more affordable with a child too, his feet are growing constantly so I can’t afford to kit him out with a massive shoe stash every few weeks!
I find the best way to go about it is to have a couple of more expensive pairs that we’ll get loads of wear out of, and then maybe a more affordable alternative for going on muddy country walks or for when Reuben is out playing in the garden. That way I won’t be as bothered when they get all dirty and scruffy! For affordable options, there’s some fab options from places like Primark, H&M, Uppersole… each have a good assortment to choose from for both the adults and the kids.
For the shoes that will last, my personal favourite brands are Vans and Converse. I’ve been wearing them both for years and they’re pretty much the only shoes I’ve ever had that last amazingly well – and wash well too! They’re sort of a mid-priced shoe as they’re not really cheap but they’re also not overly expensive. I love my Dr Martens too which are definitely a bit more of an investment but the leather means they will last years and years (I hope!) but I’ve only owned mine for a few months so I can’t really comment on that yet. I’ve been told by many that they really do last for years though so I have high hopes.
It’s easier than you think to narrow down a shoe collection, especially if you have a similar taste when it comes to shoes. I’m personally rather fussy when it comes to shoes and I like to own pairs that are staples and will go with everything. My Dr Martens were a bit of an investment for me, but I wear them religiously when the weather is cooler and/or it’s raining outside – they’re just a pair of black boots and go with everything. I find black or white shoes are the best colours to go with as you can’t go wrong. I have a black pair of vans and a white pair of converse so I’ve always got a pair of shoes that will go with any outfits, no matter how light or dark the overall look is. I love wearing pretty floral summer dresses with my white converse, it creates a gorgeous summery look!
I go down the same route when it comes to Reubens wardrobe too, he also has a pair of white converse and a pair of black vans (basically we are twins) and whatever style of outfit I put him in, he always has a pair of shoes that will go with it. I will either buy more affordable shoes for him for muddy walks or playing out – or I will keep back some of his more expensive ones when they’re starting to look grubby! He has a pair of puma’s that I kept for exactly that reason and it works a treat!
Do you own lots of shoes? Do you think you could own a smaller collection?
