sick of looking at a piece of furniture?
I think we all get to a stage where we can be fed up of a piece of furniture. Even if we love the piece itself, you can get to the point where you need to switch things up a bit, even if it's just a little! With us all being confined to our homes, I'm sure you're noticing things that you might not have previously, or you might be getting fed up of looking at the same four walls (or in this case furniture!) I'm sharing a few ways in how you can update a piece of furniture regardless of the cost of it initially. You might have something expensive that you just want to change a little, or you may have something cheap that you want to give a complete revamp. Hopefully these simple tips will give you a bit of inspiration and save you forking out on something completely new.

paint it
Painting furniture is the most obvious thing to do, but sometimes you simply can't be bothered. Weigh up the cost of the materials you'll need vs the cost of an entire new piece of furniture and that might persuade you! You can literally paint anything too, albeit some things are bit more difficult, but it's still possible. You can paint laminate and plastic, glass, vinyl, wood, metal... you name it. I'm painting my kitchen cupboards soon despite them being laminate, all you need is to give them a good sand and prime them with an adhesive primer so that the paint sticks well. If you're painting wood, you can even just stain it if you just want to change the colour of it rather than paint over it. I painted my bedside table, even though I absolutely loved the gorgeous wood, it was just too red toned for me and the new bedroom style I was going for. I made the decision to paint it black and I have no regrets - it looks so much better. All I had to do was give it a good sand, clean and then whack on some paint. So much cheaper than buying new.
change the hardware
Changing the features of a piece of furniture can make more difference than you think. I changed my chest of drawers from metal handles, to decorative ceramic white and gold ones, and then I spray painted them black. So they've been changed twice and each time they've been given a completely new look which is crazy. If you have a table, you can even do things like switch up the table legs to give it a new look. You don't always have to completely replace things either, you could just take the handles off and spray paint them like I did! Homesense (although not open right now) is amazing for selling sets of handles if you're looking to update your furniture. I think mine were £1 each so that makes it a super affordable furniture update but it really makes a difference.
before
after
restyle it
And without doing any of the above, you can update a piece of furniture simply by restyling it! Take the drawers above for example, although I didn't change them that much as I was happy with the styling, I switched up little bits to make them fit in with my style as I changed tastes. I swapped the dried grass, changed the vase, added some new candles, and changed the big print whilst taking away the smaller one. Such small changes but it looks totally different. I bought some new things but you don't need to if you don't want to spend anything, you could just switch up your ornaments. Maybe put your bedroom ones in the lounge and vice versa, trust me, if you're sick of the same sights then this really can change your mind instead of splashing out!
