When I did my hallway makeover last year, it was a massive improvement from the cold empty, concrete floored shell it was when I moved in. It was painted, had flooring put down, added bits here and there to give it a bit of colour and character - however it's now due some improvements. I'm not sure when I'll get around to making them as I'm still focusing on other parts of the house but I originally went for a very monochrome look and now I'd quite like to make it a bit cosier. My styles have improved and changed massively since moving into the first home that I've been able to put my mark on. I still love the flooring and the white stairs, but for such a narrow space, I think some more attention to detail could make all the difference! I thought that I would share some of the changes that I plan to make...
STAIR RUNNER
At first I wasn't too bothered about having a stair runner and I was happy with my white stairs, but for the last few months I've been itching to get one. I see them in so many other homes on pinterest & insta and they look so good. Not only that but I think they bring a non-carpeted staircase together a bit more and ultimately feel a lot cosier. The amount of times Reuben has dropped toys down the stairs too - the loud thuds would be a lot quieter if there was a runner down the middle! I love the look of brown woven ones with black borders like in the above images.
FLOORING
I'm still pretty happy with my flooring choice, I love the victorian-esque checkerboard flooring. Mine isn't tiled, it's just vinyl. The only reason I would change it at this point is because I do find my laminate flooring throughout the majority of my house a bit easier to clean than the vinyl in the hallway. I think maybe because it's a black and white pattern, the white parts tends to pick up dirt quite easily and it can be harder to clean. I think changing the floor will be at the bottom of my priority list but I'd love to get some engineered wood flooring. It's one of those super luxury purchases that I've always wanted but I think if I had it in the hallway it wouldn't be too costly as the space isn't big anyway. Plus it would be great for the heavy traffic.
CONSOLE TABLE
I currently have a huge radiator cover in my hallway, as I was desperate to hide the radiator in there originally. Without it, the space does look so much bigger so I think eventually I would like to replace the cover with a console table. Maybe one that slots in so that the radiator sits in the middle of it without getting in the way if that makes sense? Either that or I'll put a shelf up above the radiator and utilise the space underneath. I definitely think there's potential to make better use of the hallway space - even if it is narrow!
WARM DETAILS
As the overall theme of my hallway is very monochrome, I plan to brighten it up with some warmer details. I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with a black framed mirror or swap it out for a brass or light wood one instead. I think some light wood frames with bright coloured prints would add a great splash of colour and warmth too. I'm also thinking some nice dried flowers or greenery for the console table or shelf that I end up putting in there. What do you think?!
