Five Years of Ru x
Happy 5th birthday to my angel babe. I love doing these little birthday posts every year, it's a bit much to do more regular updates now that he's older but these birthday blog posts really are special to look back on. I love our annual photoshoots as well - I wonder when he'll be too old for these?! Haha. I cannot believe that Ru is five years old, I probably say this every year in every birthday blog, but when people tell you that they grow up fast. They really, really do. He went through lots of huge development changes during the year that he went from 3 to 4, with the main things being his speech and potty training, but I think from age 4 to 5 I've really noticed the most difference in him. Even looking back at photos of him from last years birthday, you can see he still looks very much like a chubby little toddler, whereas now he's lost all of that and really looks like a boy. It's so hard being a mum, you love watching them grow up and turn into this beautiful person, but I'm so sad to leave the baby days behind!
Both Ru and I have been through lots of changes throughout the last year, I met my boyfriend Jake at the end of last year who's a dad of 2, so Ru is now part of a family of 5. That's been a big change for him, as it's just been the two of us for the first four years of his life, but he's as happy as ever and it hasn't affected him in the slightest. It's still just us two a lot of the time as Jake works long hours during the week, and we live in different towns, plus he only has his children every other weekend so it's been a nice slow and gradual change for him. He's bonded with Jake amazingly though, Jake treats him like his own so I guess that's why it's been easy for him to bond so well. He adores Jakes kids too and it's lovely for them when we all get to have sleepovers and spend time as a 5. They all play together so lovely and have the best time.
The biggest change that Ru has been through this year is definitely starting big school this September. He's been there for almost a month now and he's absolutely thriving. He loves it so much, he's settled in like a dream and he has the loveliest teachers. I was a little worried about his transition from pre-school to big school, as I sent him to a pre-school two minutes from our house when we were still new to York, and the school it's joined on to isn't a catholic school, which I had my heart set on. For no other reason than my family and I are catholics and I really like the curriculum. When he's older, he can choose his own secondary school, but for now I'm really happy with my decision! Anyway, his primary school is a little bit further away and he was starting not knowing anyone there, although clearly my worries were for nothing as he's already made tons and tons of new friends. I had a meeting with his teacher on Monday afternoon to hear how he's settling in and she had nothing but praise for how well behaved he is, what a good listener he is and how confident he is. She said he's super independent and switched on, taking everything in. He's picking up reading and spelling already and he's not even been there a month. They adapt so well don't they? Honestly, my favourite thing is sitting down for dinner and hearing all about his days at school, he's doing so well and I'm so proud of him.
This little one is absolutely police and emergency services obsessed, he wants to be a policeman when he's bigger. I took him to the emergency services museum in Sheffield not long ago and he was in his element, he's met a few policemen and had chats with them too! He loves it. A couple of my friends are police officers so at least when he's older he'll get to ask them for tips haha! He's very much a stereotypical boy and loves all things vehicles, trucks, cars, trains, planes, you name it. He's recently got into superheroes too, and he adores playing lego. We started a big lego collection this year, although he was a bit young at first so he's only just getting into building things from scratch himself, but he'll get there. He got an Xbox last Christmas from his dad so he's also obsessed with playing that much to my joy, but thankfully we have a nice balance. He learned to ride a bike the other month so he went from a balance bike to a pedal bike and he loves riding it so much more than his balance bike. I'm just gutted that he learned at the end of summer, but hopefully we can just wrap up warm and still have lots of bike rides.
I know probably every parent ever says the same, but he really is just the sweetest little soul. He's so loving and kind, he's constantly kissing and cuddling Jake and I and telling us that he loves us. He's my little best friend and I adore him so much, I really couldn't ask for a better behaved little boy, he's an absolute star. Happy Birthday Ru, here's to another precious year with you <3
