Fine motor skills are the main skills we use in our day-to-day lives to hold things, interact with things, drive a car, and pick up pens to write with them. It’s something your child will also become used to as they develop their skills. Parents can help children along with their fine motor skills using these top tips recommended by this nursery in London.
Use a range of toys
Thankfully a common occurrence in homes is the number of toys you’ll spot around the home – a great way to get your child used to the feeling of handling different feelings and sizes of toys. So long as the toys your child interacts with are age appropriate, they can help your child understand the different sensations and feelings you get from each toy they come into contact with.
Allow them to pick things up of different weights
So long as it’s not too heavy for a child to pick up, of course, you can try to give them items that are of different weights and shapes. An empty cup is going to have a different feeling to a sippy cup that’s full, which is where children can often spill things and make a mess. But you should persevere where you can and it will help your child learn how to hold these things correctly over time.
Pick up arts and crafts
Art is a wonderful thing to have in a child’s world. Explore this by giving your child a range of tools, paints and glue to have fun and play with. Use handprint paints and stick them around the house, or get out a colouring book for children to get used to holding colouring pencils or crayons. Let them make the decisions with this process to see what they enjoy the most out of arts and crafts.
