There are many reasons why you want to downsize your home, you could have had kids leave for school or you may simply want to have less space as you find you just have so much stuff and clutter and it is becoming a disorganised way to live which can also affect your mental health.
Sort out what you want to keep
Before you sell your house, it’s important to sort out what you want to keep and what you can give away or that you need to throw away. You may have a lot of stuff that you don’t need and can safely let go of. However, there are some things that you should hold onto and maybe even take with you when moving into a smaller home.
Here is a list of things that have sentimental value:
- Photos and mementoes from your life
- Awards and certificates from school or work
- Grandma’s old tea set
As you sort, divide it into piles for recycling and charity.
You don’t have to keep everything in its original packaging. For example, if you’ve purchased a new bed frame and want to donate the old one, don’t worry about keeping it in the original box. The organisation that will be receiving your donation would rather use their time and resources on other things than boxing up old items! If there is something that doesn’t need to be kept in its original packaging – like clothes or toys – consider taking photos of these items so that they can still be used as reference later on down the line.
Also remember: Recycling should be a top priority when downsizing your home because every piece of material thrown away has an impact on our environment! Make sure to recycle all electronics (including cell phones) and old clothes/shoes before throwing them out with regular trash bins.
Consider storage for your remaining belongings.
Once you’ve decided to downsize, consider storage for your remaining belongings. If this is not a good option for you, find an affordable place that can store what you need until you are ready to move into your new home.
Good self-storage facilities offer:
- Secure premises with 24/7 surveillance cameras around the perimeter and in the hallways;
- A security gate at all times;
- Security code access through the gate; and
- Facility manager on-site during business hours.

There are many ways to deal with too much stuff!
If you have too much stuff, there are many ways to deal with it. You can donate your old clothes and toys to charity, sell them on eBay if they are still usable or worth money, throw them out if they are unusable or worthless, and store the remainder in self-storage units until you find homes for them. Make this a goal to work towards.
So, we’ve given you some things to think about when downsizing your home. We hope this helps you decide how much stuff is too much, and which method would work best for you!
