Creating a home gym doesn’t always seem as easy as it can be, but it’s a much more convenient way for lots of us to squeeze in those weekly workouts. This can be down to various reasons such as busy lives, unsociable working hours, having little ones at home, or simply just not wanting to workout in a public space.
I know personally, that I much prefer working out at home than in a public gym space, but it’s also the only way that I manage to fit my workout routine in to my week as I work full time, as well as have two young children at home with me outside of my working hours.
Creating a gym in the comfort of your own home is much easier than you think it is, and here are some of the ways that you can get started with to create your very own, home gym.
Figure Out Your Workout Area
If you have a garage or spare room that you can have your home gym in, then that is ideal and will work great for you. However, I promise you that if you don’t have this, it doesn’t mean you can’t still have a home gym. My house is too small for me to have my very own gym dedicated space, all of our bedrooms are in use, our downstairs is fully open plan, and we don’t have a garage.
I’ve managed to get around this by creating storage for all my workout gear in my living and office areas, and then just getting it out as and when I start my workout routines. There’s a space behind my armchair that’s big enough to roll my mat out, lie down, and fit my step box in. It’s not my perfect workout space, but it works for me and that’s the main thing!
Start Out Small
I think the biggest overwhelming element of making a home gym, is thinking that you need to buy all the equipment straight away. This isn’t true, I personally started out small and built it up over time, and still continue to add to it now. I started out by investing in a yoga mat, step box, and a couple of different sized dumbbells. As I worked out more and got stronger, I added another dumbbell set to my collection and will eventually sell the smaller ones, to replace them with heavier ones.
I’ve also added more equipment over time as I’ve changed up my workout routines, and still have lots more on my wish list that I’ll start to make space for before investing. It’s really not necessary to have all the things at once, you can do a great workout routine with very little equipment!
Choose Your Equipment Wisely
Another great element to a home gym, is that you can invest in pieces of equipment designed to save you on storage space. There are great options available these days, such as under desk treadmills that can lie flat against a wall, go under a desk or even underneath the bottom of your sofa. Step boxes are stackable and can be stored stacked upon each other, or taken apart and stored separately.
Again Faster also have a great range of weight lifting benches that can be perfect for home gyms as they’re adjustable and fold up flat, meaning that they not only take up little room, but you can do lots of different workouts with them. Pieces like this make a great investment as it means you don’t need a huge range of products taking up all of your space.
