On the Blue Flag Shore: Golden Coast Beach Hotel, Protaras
Protaras is the kind of place that gets overlooked in conversations about Cyprus travel, usually because the conversation has already moved on to Paphos or Limassol. That is a reasonable shame. The eastern coast of the island, where Protaras sits, has some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean, and Louma Beach — directly in front of the Golden Coast Beach Hotel — is the thing people mean when they talk about a proper Mediterranean beach.
The Golden Coast is a four-star hotel on that beachfront. It is, by the hotel’s own description, a favourite with locals and visitors from afar — which is the kind of thing hotels say, but in this case the location makes it plausible. A beachfront hotel that works tends to build a following. This one has been doing it for a while.
The Beach
Louma Beach has a Blue Flag accreditation, which is the international standard for water quality, beach management, and safety. The sand is soft and fine. The water is shallow and sheltered by a natural bay, which makes it particularly good for families with young children who need water that doesn’t knock them off their feet. The calmness of it is a feature, not a compromise.
The hotel has sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach, and the Poseidon Pool Bar — positioned between the swimming pools and the sea — can take orders directly from loungers. It is a small convenience that changes how you experience a beach day.
The Rooms
Rooms here use memory foam beds, marble en-suite bathrooms, and spacious balconies. The colour schemes run warm and classic rather than minimal — the kind of interior design that reads as considered without calling attention to itself. Standard rooms accommodate couples, and the hotel has configurations that work for families of four in a single room, which is rarer than it should be at most properties.
The grandest option is the Grand Suite, which offers sea views and additional space for guests who want to treat a trip as more than a base camp. That said, the standard sea view rooms are more than sufficient for a week on the eastern coast.
Facilities
The outdoor pool is surrounded by tropical greenery and includes a separate kids pool with a water slide. There’s also an indoor pool inside the Aegeospas, which combines a Jacuzzi, sauna, and steam bath — useful on the handful of overcast days that happen even in high season.
A fully equipped gym covers cardio and resistance equipment for guests maintaining routines. The entertainment programme runs from morning — sports activities run by professional instructors — through to evening with the animation team. It is the kind of structure that works well for guests who prefer their holiday to have some shape to it.
The hotel also has padel and tennis courts, which is a newer addition to the facilities and one that fills quickly. If you’re planning to use them, it is worth booking in advance.
Around Protaras
Protaras sits roughly 63 kilometres from Larnaca International Airport, which is the only real inconvenience the location offers. Once there, the area has its own rhythm. Fig Tree Bay — one of the most photographed beaches on the island — is a short drive north. Cape Greko, a protected nature park with sea caves and walking trails, sits to the south.
The town itself is small and walkable, with restaurants clustered along the main strip and a quieter side that becomes more apparent once the tourist peak passes in September. For birdwatchers, the wetlands around Paralimni Lake attract species throughout the year.
