You may have heard of the maximalist decor trend. With this trend, ‘more is more’ – the more textures, patterns, and colors, the better! Minimalist decor is still popular, but it’s not for everybody. Some homeowners prefer to be surrounded by pictures that they love, textures that they can enjoy, and colors that brighten their mood. If you’d like to achieve maximalist decor, read on for some advice. 

 

Go Shopping For Artwork

Artwork should be present all over a maximalist decor. You should have a whole wall of it, if you can! Just don’t buy pieces for the sake of buying pieces, and make sure you only buy pieces that you love. You can take your time working on an amazing gallery wall. Try looking in magazines for prints, commissioning artwork from a local artist, and looking in charity shops. 

 

Pick Your Favorite Color Palette 

Decide on your color palette before you begin. You should use bold colors, but just bear in mind if you’re not comfortable with this then it might be worth only picking a handful, rather than just going all out and picking all of the colors. Use a color wheel to see which colors look great together. 

 

Only Ever Add Decor You Love 

Shopping for decor should take time. You only want to add decor that you love! When asking yourself why do people redecorate their homes?, one of the main reasons you’ll find is because they want to be surrounded by beautiful items that make them happy. Make sure the decor you choose is going to make you happy for the foreseeable. Don’t pick something for the sake of it or to be in ‘fashion’. Grey has been in fashion for the last few years, but it can look quite drab and boring. You’ll probably regret choosing something grey if you don’t usually like it. 

 

Keep Comfort In Mind

Comfort should always be kept in mind as you decorate, too. Make sure you choose things for both comfort and style. In fact, comfort should come first. When you choose style over comfort you will no doubt regret your choice eventually. 

 

Don’t Aim For ‘Perfect’ – Aim For ‘Personalisation’ 

The goal is not to aim for a perfect maximalist decor. It’s to aim for personalisation! You want your decor to tell people about you and your likes/dislikes. 

 

Utilize Books 

Books should be used all over with a maximalist decor. Coffee table books work well, but you should look at getting a special book shelf, too. 

 

Mix Up Patterns 

Mixing patterns can be tough, but it can be done. If you’ve not done this before, it’s a good idea to choose just three and then use them in varying amounts to make sure they work. Monochrome patterns can work with just about any other pattern, so try adding one of those. 

 

Avoid Displaying Every Memory You’ve Ever Had 

Although this is maximalist, you don’t want to use it as an excuse to display every memory you’ve ever had. A room should have a light theme. You don’t want it to look like you’ve just thrown everything you own everywhere.
