Sometimes, there’s nothing better than curling up in a comfy spot with a good book. A dedicated reading nook may seem like a luxury reserved for larger homes with personal libraries and lots of space but the truth is, you can create the perfect reading nook in even the smallest of spaces and a cosy reading corner is a great way to make the most of those awkward, unused spaces in your home.
What is a reading nook?
A reading nook or book nook is a small space in your home where you can relax and unwind with your current read. There are many different styles of reading nooks but they all have a few things in common – something comfortable to sit on, good lighting and a place for your book!
Where to create a reading nook
If you’re looking to create a book nook in your home, here are a few places you might want to consider.
Use a bay window
Bay windows make perfect reading nooks, as they come with a view and a connection to nature, so you can bask in the sun as you read or listen to the raindrops against the window pane. If you already have a window seat, then you’re well on your way to creating your perfect reading nook. If not, then a padded storage chest or a carefully placed armchair and side table can help you create a fantastic book nook.
A stair landing
Do you have a large landing on your stairs? Or perhaps a generously sized upstairs hall? If so, you might want to consider turning part of it into a reading corner. These spaces often go unused, but with a carefully placed chair or chaise longue, a bookcase and a lamp, you can create a comfy reading nook.
Under the stairs
Awkward spaces under the stairs can sometimes wind up as dead space or a messy storage area for household items but they’re perfect for a reading nook. Use bespoke shelving to help you make the most of the vertical space beneath your stairs, and add a comfy armchair or small sofa and a floor lamp.
Lighting a reading nook
When you’ve decided where you’re going to create your reading nook, you need to think about how you’ll light it. Choosing the right lighting for your nook is crucial, not only for practical reasons to avoid eye strain but also to help you create that cosy feel that’s so essential for a book nook.
If floor space is limited, a well-placed, ambient table lamp on a side table or bookshelf can bring a soft glow to a dull space. Alternatively, floor lamps can be used to illuminate your reading nook and add to the cosy feel of the space.
Making your nook cosy and comfortable
For the finishing touches to your new reading nook, consider adding little extras. Soft furnishings, such as blankets, throws and comfy cushions will make the nook feel even cosier and more inviting. Houseplants also make a fantastic addition to a reading nook as they have many benefits including bringing a sense of calm to your reading nook and improving attention helping you focus on your book!
