Happy 6th Birthday to my Ru x
I can't believe it's time for the annual birthday post again, and that I've been a mum for six years?! Where has that gone? It feels like five minutes ago that I was running around after this little tiny toddler with wispy blonde curls, and now he's a full sized boy with lots of attitude! The biggest change for him during this past year has been our new little addition to the family, Luca. It has been the best thing ever seeing him finally become a big brother and have a sibling to love. When we first brought Luca home, Ru was definitely a little overwhelmed but he soon settled into big brother mode and he constantly asks for cuddles, to kiss him and to play with him. He has taken it completely in his stride and adores Luca to bits, and it's so heartwarming to see.

How the birthday boy is doing...
Ru is now in year one at school and I really don't know why I ever worried about him starting big school as he's doing so well. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that my child is perfectly behaved, because he isn't and I wouldn't expect him to be, but I've never had a negative thing said about him during every parents evening I've been to. He loves his teacher this year and she did nothing but praise him when I went to his first year one parents evening. It makes me so proud and I hope his love for school continues into secondary. It took him until he was three to start talking properly, and I remember being so concerned, and now he's excelling at school with his phonics and his reading & writing and I just love that for him.
He still wants to be a police officer when he grows up, but I think he loves firemen just as much. The love for the emergency services hasn't gone away! I think he loves what typically most six year old boys love, such as Roblox, Minecraft, Lego... he loves dressing up and playing with his swords too. He is obsessed with his iPad, but he is also fantastic at playing with toys on his own and with other children, and has the biggest imagination which I really love about him. I'm not the kind of mum to deprive my children of technology as that's the kind of world that we live in now, however I do fully believe in having a good balance on and off screen time and I feel like we absolutely have that.
He's recently become obsessed with note writing too, he loves going up to his desk in his room and writing little notes. He'll write me little notes/letters that say 'mummy' and I open them to messages like 'I love you' or sometimes to a little picture and it's really, really sweet. He also has a red notebook that he says is his 'work' and writes and draws things in it with a pen. It's quite nice as he's never been into art & crafts all that much but seems to be getting a bit more into it as he gets older.
He really does make me laugh on a daily basis with some of the things that he comes out with too. I was watching a BBC drama and a couple were smooching and he burst out with "I think that's her dad." It really cracked me up. He still calls marshmallows 'smarshmallows' and he calls Luca's teether his 'teaser'. It's so hard to correct as it's so cute and innocent and I hate that he's growing up so fast. Sometimes he has the most grown up conversations with you and seems to know so much about so much, and then other times he comes out with a load of absolute rubbish (said in the nicest way possible!) but it's funny and adorable at the same time.
I'm super excited to see what 2023 brings for us as a family but I hope time slows down just a little!
