Are you looking for some tips on adding colourful artwork to your home?
Adding colourful artwork to my home is one of my favourite ways to turn a room from a bland shell, into a space full of colour and character. I just love prints and how there are endless ways to decorate your home with them. Desenio is one of my go-to places to shop for wall art as they stock everything you could want in a print, from the fine lines and basics, to typography pieces, all the way through to the vast selection of colourful artwork. I’ve recently picked up a few new pieces to add to my home, so I thought I’d share some tips on choosing colourful artwork for your home!
Choose art that compliments your space
Choosing art that compliments your space is the first step. I love adding colour, but I tend to opt for colour in the form of pastels, and greens & pinks, as I know that my home is filled with all of those colours already. I also tend to prefer girly and floral prints as my home is filled with lots of pretty girly trinkets and I always have florals everywhere, from vases of fresh flowers, to floral themed decor. However, if my space was a bit more moody and dark, I’d probably pick prints that were more abstract, masculine and deeper in colour. Think things like deep blues and reds mixed with some mustard tones. It ultimately depends on your interior style and taste, but just having a good think about the colours that will work in your space is a must.
Fill blank spaces on your walls
This is something I personally struggle with, as we have an open plan home, but one of my favourite ways to put up prints is by filling in blank spaces on my walls. I love a standalone print, a big gallery wall, or just 3 or 4 prints elegantly put together.
UTILISE OTHER BLANK SPACES
There’s no rules when it comes to decorating your home. You’ll see in the photo I’ve added above, that I’ve actually hung a large print on our cupboard door. Because our home is open plan and we are lacking in wall space, I wanted to add some colour behind the dining table so this is the best thing I could come up with! Eventually, we’ll probably change our doors and paint them a nice colour, but for now this works.
MIX THEM INTO YOUR DECOR
As well as placing prints on the walls, I also love mixing them into pretty much any space I can find. I have some on my office shelves, my kitchen shelves, on top of my alcove cupboards, and on top of my storage cabinet. Sometimes they work on their own, but mostly I just mix them into the decor as a backdrop, and place things in front of them like ornaments, candles, plants, you name it.
PUT TOGETHER CONTRASTING PRINTS
When adding prints to one room or space, I like trying to put together contrasting prints for something a bit more fun. Most of my recent prints were picked for my boys new bedroom and I opted for a few colourful ones, as well as a couple of black and white prints, and some darker options to add a nice contrast. I think they all work lovely together and it’s created such a fun space.
