Styling your bedroom wall panelling…
It’s been a long time since I did a post on panelling, but my Easy DIY Wall Panelling has had so many hits, that I had to share my latest bedroom wall panelling project in more detail. My last traditional wall panelling was done on one singular feature wall in my previous house, but this time I panelled the whole bedroom. This room was colour drenched and I wanted it to have lots of detail, so panelling the whole bedroom made the most sense. I’ve loved styling this room so much, and if you like what you see… keep reading for some bedroom wall panelling styling tips!

Lean into the colour of the wall panelling
I think the biggest tip I could give when it comes to bedroom wall panelling, is to lean into whatever colour you pick to paint the walls. In my last house I leaned into the beige paint that I picked, and had a very monochrome look to the room. I’m past my beige days now, so I colour drenched this room in a deep shade of pink, and fully leaned into the beautiful bold colour by adding lots of other pink tones and fun elements. The pink & red prints I chose for the walls compliment the paint colour, as do the baby pink lampshades. I also have some light pink accessories dotted around the room, and picked out a green funky wavy mirror to really indulge in the bold design choice.
Centre your furniture to the panelling
There’s nothing worse than off-centre furniture when it comes to wall panelling – I’m sorry if that offends! We really had to put our thinking hats on when it came to our bedroom wall panelling, because the room is fairly small and it was tricky to figure out the dimensions without something being in the way. In the end, we swapped out our regular length radiator for a tall narrow traditional style radiator, and that gave us more space to play with, so that we could centre the bed in the middle of the room. You can’t tell but one gap between the corners of the room and the panelling is bigger than the other, so that our bedside tables can fit happily next to the bed and nothing looks off-centre. It’s definitely worth getting clever about how you design the space before you actually put panelling on the walls.

INVEST IN SHUTTERS
I know how expensive shutters can be, but if you can budget for it then I’d really recommend it. I was lucky enough to work with Shutterly Fabulous who recently installed mine for me, and I can’t tell you how much shutters compliment the traditional wall panelling. The whole room has gone up a level since they were installed and I’m obsessed with how it looks!
NEVER SKIP COVING
I refuse to renovate a room without coving now, because it really does finish off a room so nicely. If you’re putting panelling on the walls, then I’d highly advise that you also add coving around the room. We opted for a really intricate traditional plaster coving for that detailed look, but you can even get polystyrene coving now from places like B&Q that’s really cheap. It’s generally not got as much detail in it, but it still looks the part and makes a big difference – we have it in our boys bedroom.
ADD OTHER TRADITIONAL FEATURES
Wall panelling is a really traditional feature, and whilst my home is very much modern traditional, I think adding in other traditional features is so important. I couldn’t imagine this room looking the same with our old bog standard radiator, so adding in a traditional column radiator was definitely the right choice. The shutters are another traditional feature you could add, or you could furnish the room with a traditional metal bed frame, or some antique finds. The possibilities are endless!
Have you got wall panelling in your bedroom, how have you styled it?
