The lastΒ twoΒ years saw very little travelling abroad, with most of us enjoying exploring our very ownΒ locationsΒ wheneverΒ we could.Β NowΒ thatΒ most restrictionsΒ areΒ lifting,Β some of us are back booking flights for business or pleasure.Β Β
NewΒ rules for international travel came into effect in IrelandΒ in July of this year.Β But what has changed and what do we need to know about the new way of travelling?Β Β AnΒ Post Insurance haveΒ outlined a few tips below to help you navigate the unknownΒ before, during and after yourΒ journey.Β
BEFORE YOU TRAVELΒ
CheckΒ your destinationβs requirementsΒ
Itβs important to checkΒ theΒ public health advice, document requirements andΒ COVID-19 restrictions that are in place in the country you are going to.Β The Department for Foreign AffairsΒ hasΒ outlinedΒ someΒ travel advice by countryΒ hereΒ which should be of assistance.Β Make sure you have the appropriate travel insurance cover in place andΒ closely check the details relating to COVID-19.Β
KeepΒ up to dateΒ
Itβs essentialΒ youΒ keep up to date on the requirements of your destinationΒ country. You should continue to check the relevant sitesΒ right up until your departure dateΒ as theΒ requirementsΒ mayΒ changeΒ at short notice,Β depending on the situation at the time.Β
Donβt forget your usual checksΒ
Itβs easy to get bogged down with all the new requirements followingΒ COVID-19Β but donβt forget to check your usual list.Β For example,Β make sure your passport is in dateΒ and youβre aware of the weight restrictions for yourΒ luggageΒ so you donβt end up with an unexpected bill at the airport.Β You may need to add a fewΒ newΒ items when packing such as face masks, hand sanitizer andΒ perhapsΒ even a thermometer.Β
Β
DURING YOUR STAY
Β
Always have your EUΒ COVID-19Β Digital Certificate with youΒ
Your EUΒ COVID-19Β Digital Certification will confirm if you have been vaccinated againstΒ COVID-19, have had a negative testΒ resultΒ or have recovered fromΒ COVID-19. Some indoor establishments will requireΒ suchΒ proof to gain entry to their premises.Β It might be a good idea to have a printout as well as having it on your phone, just in case your phone batteryΒ dies,Β or you have no coverage in that area.Β
Mask wearingΒ
Make sure youβreΒ awareΒ ofΒ where youβll be required to wear a mask.Β In some countries,Β mask use is still mandatory indoors or in enclosed spaces and on public transport.Β If you intend to travel around the country youβre visiting, youβllΒ need to check the regulations in each specific part of thatΒ country in case they differ.Β
If you get sick while abroadΒ
If you develop anyΒ COVID-19Β like symptoms while abroad start by avoiding any physical contact with anyone else,Β inform the relevant local healthcare authorities immediately and follow their advice.Β Β
BEFORE YOU RETURNΒ
Check on the situation back homeΒ
Just like your destination country, the rules at home can quickly change too. Make sure youβre informed by regularly checking the relevant sites βΒ right up until you get on the planeΒ β to seeΒ if any measures have changed since youΒ left,Β just in caseΒ you need to make alternative arrangements.Β
Arrive earlyΒ
You should arrive at the airport earlier than usual;Β with the extraΒ securityΒ checksΒ and check-in processesΒ required at the airport,Β you should be prepared for more delays than usual.Β
Whether youβre taking a meeting in London, catching up with friends in France or going on a family holiday in sunny Spain,Β planning aheadΒ and following official advice will help you stay safe while travelling. Just donβt forget your sunscreen!Β
