Are you thinking of adding colour to your neutral home? Maybe these tips will help…
Over the last year or so, I’ve fully embraced my colour era and I now love adding colour all over my home. I don’t know why beige homes were ever the in thing, but I don’t see myself ever going back to a home that’s lacking in character. Adding colour to your home can completely change it’s personality, even when you start out small. However, I know how intimidating it can feel at first – as I’ve been there myself!
If you’re currently taking the plunge into adding more colour to your neutral home, then maybe these small tips can help you get started.
Begin With Textures
Starting out with items that are easily changeable can be a great place to begin, such as blankets, cushions or even a rug. I really like colourful placemats on my dining table, and coasters on my coffee and side tables. These are all things that are pretty easy to switch out before you move on to bigger items in your home, and can help you gradually build up to those larger items.
Find Colourful Decor That You Love
Another great place to start, is by browsing the shops for colourful ornaments and prints that you love the look of. Things like candles, vases or even plant pots that have more personality to them can be easy things to gradually add to your home. I love a Homesense trip for hunting out colourful décor, I always come home with so many things from here. They sell all the quirky and fun décor so I’d highly recommend a visit if you’re looking for some bits.
Figuring Out Your Vibe
It can be useful to figure out what kind of vibe you want in your home in order to get the right look for you. If you’re really not sure, a great starting point would be to get on Pinterest and pin lots of home interiors that you love the look of. From your board, you can start to get an idea of what your perfect home needs to look like. You might like calm homes that have creamy neutrals mixed with soft pastel colours. Or maybe a cosy vibe with orange and rust tones. There are no set rules when it comes to adding colour to your home, so get pinning and have fun with it!
Experimenting With Paint
If you like the idea of colourful walls but it feels really overwhelming, try and start out small by simply painting one feature wall, or a door at first. The first wall that I ever painted in a colour out of my comfort zone was our fireplace & alcoves feature wall in the living room. I went for a soft green as I was very new to colour at this point, but I loved it so much. After that I painted some half wall panelling in my boys bedroom, and then moved on to fully colour drenching my own bedroom in a deep pink!
It’s really fun to experiment with colour but it can help by starting out with smaller projects before taking on the big ones so that you can slowly introduce the colours to your home.
