Be kinder to your skin, here are some gentle ways to remove makeup…
Lots of us wear makeup on a daily basis, whether that’s because we want to, or because it helps us to feel more confident in our day to day lives. Wearing makeup can be fun and expressive, but it’s important to remember to remove it properly at the end of the day, to protect the skin from irritation and keep pores from getting clogged, which results in breakouts. It’s also equally as important to remove makeup gently so that we’re protecting our skin from damage. Using the wrong skincare for your skin type, as well as any harsh scrubbing, can result in damaged and irritated skin, which I’m sure none of us want!
A gentle, and effective skincare routine is essential to keep your skin free of blemishes, as well as leaving it looking healthy and glowing. It can take some time to figure out a skincare routine that works well for your skin type, but there’s always pointers and tips that can help you achieve that perfect skincare routine a little bit quicker.
A Gentle Guide to Removing Makeup:
Removing makeup with clean hands
The first and most important step to a good skincare routine, is to make sure your hands are clean. Have you ever been told to stop touching your spots whilst growing up? It’s because it’s so easy to transfer that bacteria to other areas of your skin which results in spreading the breakouts all over your skin. Hands are pretty much always dirty as we do everything with them, so it’s best practice to get rid of any lingering bacteria before touching your face.
Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type
This is where a bit of trial and error will come in, but choosing the right cleanser for your skin type is so important. There are so many different types of face wash to suit different skin types and needs, and some of them you’ll love, and some of them you’ll hate. You’ll also need to be careful what kind of products you use if you suffer from skin issues such as cystic acne. If you need help figuring out your skin type, the below may help:
- Normal Skin: Skin that is well-balanced, smooth in texture, and has a good moisture level.
- Oily Skin: Skin with excess oil, leading to a shiny complexion and enlarged pores.
- Dry Skin: Skin lacking in moisture that can appear dull and feel rough to the touch.
- Sensitive Skin: Skin prone to redness, itching and burning sensations when exposed to irritants.
- Combination Skin: Skin that has both oily and dry areas, typically in the T-Zone area.
By figuring out your own skin type, you’ll be able to find a cleanser suited to your skin so that when removing makeup, the cleanser works well with your skin resulting in an effective and gentle removal of makeup.
Types of cleansers
There are lots of different types of cleansers on the market to suit all skin types, and after figuring out your own skin type, it can come down to personal preference on the kind of cleanser that you want to use. Some of the most gentle cleansers can be found below.
Micellar Water
Micellar water is an extremely gentle cleanser that’s perfect for all skin types. It removes makeup, dirt and oil without any need for harsh scrubbing. If you look out for an alcohol-free formula, which many are, it will help avoid micellar water from drying out your skin.
Oil-based Cleansers
Contrary to popular belief, oil-based cleansers will not clog your pores when used properly. An oil-based cleanser is great for breaking down even the toughest of products, such as waterproof makeup. Oil-based cleansers can be perfect for those with dry skin as they help hydrate the skin as well as cleanse it.
Cleansing Balms
Cleansing balms are my personal favourite type of cleanser as someone who suffers with quite dry skin. Cleansing balms are rich and creamy, making them perfect for dry and sensitive skin, and gently melt makeup away whilst adding moisture to the skin.
Double cleanse for a thorough cleanse
A double cleanse is such an important step in your skincare routine, your first cleanse is the makeup removal cleanse, where you’re going to remove the bulk of your makeup with your gentle cleanser of choice. Your second cleanse, should be using a water-based cleanser to wash away all of the remaining dirt and residue. Using the right cleansers, you’ll be left with skin that feels lovely, clean and fresh.
Pat your face dry
If you roughly rub your face dry, it can lead to irritation and undo all the hard work you just went to, to gently cleanse your skin. The best way to dry it, is to pat it dry with a soft, clean towel.
Don’t forget your post-cleanse skincare routine
After you’ve cleansed your skin, it’s important to replenish your skins moisture. A soothing toner, hydration oil or serum, and a gentle moisturiser work wonders. Always remember to have an array of products in that work well for your skin type.
By using the gentle, effective skincare products, you can keep your skin clean and well-nourished without causing any irritation or damage. It’s so important to keep your skin happy and well looked after!
