Are you looking to make a small room in your home look bigger and brighter? Here’s how…
Making a small room look bigger and brighter can often be a little tricky, so many UK homes are small in size compared to the large homes that other countries have. It can be really easy to overcrowd them, and have them seeming messy and cluttered. If you’re looking for a few tips on how to make a small room in your home appear a little bigger and brighter, keep reading for a few ways in how you can do that.
Paint the room in a warm, bright colour
Paint choices are crucial when it comes to making a room look bigger and brighter, warmer colours tends to brighten a room, where as cooler tones can make them seem even smaller. Neutral colours tend to work best, a lovely warm white can really open up a space, and then colour can be added in other forms such as artwork and furniture. I’ve used Farrow & Ball ‘Wimborne White’ in my downstairs area and it’s a gorgeous warm white that adds a little colour to the walls whilst keeping it looking bright and airy.
Make the most of natural lighting
Make the most out of any natural lighting, adding light blinds or shutters that can be fully opened, or lightweight curtains or voiles. I have white slatted blinds all around my home that can be adjusted to let in as much or as little light as I want, as well as some lovely sheer voiles across my patio doors. These are great for letting in lots of daylight whilst still giving us privacy, and I always get annoyed at my other half if I come down on a morning and he’s not opened them yet – daylight is everything!
Paint all the trims in the wall colour
If you have coving or skirting boards, painting these in the same or similar colours can give that illusion of a taller ceiling – therefore making the room look bigger than it really is. We’ve painted every skirting board in our home the same colour as the wall, as it really does make that much difference and keeps the room looking lovely and cohesive. If the colour is nice and light, this can help it look much brighter too.
Add mirrors around the room
If you’re lacking in natural light in your small room, adding mirrors around the room can help bounce the light around which contributes to making it look brighter than it really is. I love a disco ball too, covered in tiny mirrors, these really help the room look brighter – especially when those sun rays come through and shine directly on them!
Choosing furniture wisely
Make good choices when you add furniture to a small room, such as sofas with slim bodies and arms, coffee tables and side tables that nest, or ottomans with storage. Bunk beds work great in children’s bedrooms for making additional space, and built in storage is always a better option than a freestanding chest of drawers or wardrobe. Add shelves where you can, as this opens up the floor space more, and utilise storage as much as possible.
