Are you looking to add character to your children’s bedroom? Here’s some tips…
I’m currently renovating my little boys bedroom and the main goal for me, was to create a really fun, and colourful space that’s full of character. They had okay bedrooms before, half painted in nice colours, but they just weren’t overly exciting and were a little cluttered. I was really excited to have the chance to completely gut the room and redesign it with a bit more thought and added personality. If you’re also looking to create a lovely children’s bedroom, here are a few tips.
Choosing colours wisely
I think colour is so important when it comes to children’s spaces because it encourages creativity, and stimulates play. Having said that, it’s vital to choose the correct colours as certain colours (such as a bright red) are supposedly not very calming and therefore can affect things like their calm time, as well as their sleep. Greens and blues in particular, are meant to have that calming quality about them, whilst also adding a lovely pop of colour to a room, so my personal choice was a lovely baby blue for the boys bedroom. It helps that it’s my eldest’s favourite colour!
Pick a main way to add colour
Choosing a main way to add colour to a children’s bedroom would be a good first place to start. You can paint a room top to bottom, you can colour drench the ceiling in colour, you could add panelling all around the room, paint a half wall, add some colour blocking, or just simply have one specific feature wall in the room. The options are really quite endless when you think about it! Adding wallpaper instead of painting the walls is also a great choice, there are some really beautiful wallpaper choices out there that can transform a room. A wall mural can be a total show stopper too.
Sometimes, a simple neutrally painted room can have colour added in the way of posters, framed prints, wall hangings, or abstract wall murals. I love the stripes and scallops that some people choose to paint in certain areas too.
Choosing fun textiles
Textiles have the ability to turn a bedroom from boring into characterful so easily. I absolutely love a fancy bedding choice, and this carnival set from John Lewis was my pick for the boys new bedroom as it’s so colourful and fun. You can also add fun things like canopies, bed spreads, cushions, rugs or bunting which are all textiles that come in a mass of different colours and patterns.
Adding shape
Shape is another great element of creating a space full of personality, some of my personal favourites include checkered patterns and polka dots. La Redoute have a gorgeous green checkerboard rug that I recently purchased, I just haven’t decided if it’s going in the boys bedroom or their play area! You can also paint shapes on the wall using stencils, or use geometric wall stickers. Other ways can be things like picking out a bed with a curved headboard, or choosing furniture and shelves with fun shapes, such as these wavy wall shelves.
Picking statement artwork
Statement artwork is always an easy way to add some fun character to a space, when it comes to art, the pattern and colour options are completely endless. I love finding individual artists on social media when I’m looking for new prints because the art that I buy is always funky and unique which makes it extra cool. I love tapestry hangings as a way to add art too, it’s one of the things I’m still looking out for, for the boys new room. Another easy way to make them a little extra, is to put them in painted frames. I recently used up some of the abundance of paint samples that I have and painted some frames I already own to spruce them up with colour. I also really like those DIY bobbin frames!
So there are a few ways in how you can start adding character to your little ones bedroom. It doesn’t always have to cost much either, a tin of paint, depending on the brand you buy can be really quite affordable. You can also paint furniture as well as walls, and paint your own patterns rather than keeping things one solid colour.
